Qualified by God

I remember going to graduate school for Clinical Counseling not knowing what I
wanted to do after graduation. I was coming to the end of my unemployment benefits from
my previous job of 16 years and decided to not only become a PTA mom but go back to
graduate school. One evening after my addictions class, my teacher asked me if I was
looking for a job.. I replied, “actually I am looking”. She said there’s a women’s residential facility that is looking for a Program Assistant. Now I’m thinking, what is she talking about? I
don’t know anything about addiction. As if she read my mind, she said, “ I think you would
be perfect; you have a lot to contribute”. Little did I know my teacher was the new manager
of the facility and I got the job right after the interview.
What I didn’t realize at the time was
that God was doing far more than opening a door for employment. He was positioning me
in a place that would eventually reconnect me to my husband, who had been battling
addiction himself. I walked into that job feeling unprepared, but God was preparing my
heart for something deeper — understanding, compassion, and a front-row seat to the very
struggle he had been facing.
In Exodus 3:11-12 (GNT), Moses was not on board with being the messenger that
would lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, “I am nobody. How
can I go to the king and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? God answered, “I will be with you,
and when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will worship me on this mountain. That will
be the proof that I sent you”. Moses was thinking about all the reasons why he couldn’t do it, but God was saying, yes, you can because I have qualified you for this journey.
Just like Moses, I didn’t feel qualified. I knew nothing about addiction and wasn’t ready.
Looking back, I can see that God knew exactly what He was doing. He placed me in
that environment not just for a paycheck, but for purpose, healing, and restoration for me
and the women in the facility.
God will never call you without equipping you. If you’re in a season where God is calling you
into something unfamiliar or uncomfortable, remember God’s calling is never about our
confidence, but about His presence.
Lord, thank You for calling us even when we feel unqualified. Help us trust the doors You
open and remember that Your presence is our confidence. Lead us where You want us to go
and let our lives reflect Your goodness. Amen
